LAW ENFORCEMENT
Each year the Tennessee Valley Chapter honors a member of a local law enforcement organization by presenting him/her with the Law Enforcement Commendation Medal. This ceremony takes place in our December meeting, which is dedicated to honoring local civic leaders. The recipient of the medal for 2003 was Investigator Mark Adams of the Madison County Sheriff’s Department. Investigator Adams was recently cited for bravery and courage shown when apprehending a wanted suspect. He, Chief Verlon Lamaster of Grant, Alabama, and two other officers were attempting to apprehend the suspect located in a nearby residence. The suspect, being a teenager, was not expected to be a violent, however as Investigator Adams and Chief Lamaster walked into a bedroom, the suspect opened fire on them with a handgun. Investigator Adams returned fire and neutralized the threat thus saving his own life and possibly two others. Chief Lamaster was hit and eventually lost his life. With there no longer a threat, Investigator Adams moved to Chief Lamaster and attempted to give him aid in a desperate attempt to save his life. The Madison County Sheriff’s Department and the Madison County community are extremely proud of Officer Adams and his courage and devotion to the profession of law enforcement.
