OTHER ACTIVITIES Presentations: The Color Guard members present “The Life and Hard Times of the Revolutionary War Soldier” to elementary school students in the Huntsville area, Madison County, and surrounding counties. Our intent in this program is two fold: first we provide insight into early American soldier life not available in contemporary text books; and secondly, we promote SAR awareness to young Americans. In the presentation, we discuss the evolvement of the continental uniform, medical practices and techniques of that time, the items carried by the soldier in their haversack, how to load and fire a Brown Bess musket, flags of the period, and the effort by our chapter in locating, photographing and recording the GPS coordinates of graves of Revolutionary War soldiers buried in Madison County and surrounding counties. Current members of the team are Hoyt Smith, Jim Maples and Jim Alexander.
Impersonations: Each year, during the first weekend in May, hundreds of local residents gather at Maple Hill Cemetery for the “Stroll”. During the “Stroll” they hear stories told by impersonators portraying famous and important people buried in the cemetery. Several members of the Tennessee Valley Chapter take part in this activity each year. The personalities they portray are well-known doctors, politicians, actors, actresses, Revolutionary War soldiers and Civil War soldiers. Those participating in this activity are David Milam, Steve Pearce, Sid Gaddy, Ken Carpenter, Jim Maples and Jim Alexander.
